FAQs
How old do you have to be to register to play recreational soccer?
We welcome boys and girls of all ages from U5 through High School Age in our fall recreational league. U5-U10 teams are by single birth year while two years are used for U12 and U14 and the High School Age group spans U15-U18. (ie. in fall 2025 all kids born in 2016=U10, 2017=U9) Please see the age matrix here: https://www.goldcountrysoccer.org/resources/age-matrix If we are unable to form single year teams in a location, we will combine age groups and they will play in the older age division.
Are the teams coed?
U5, U6 and High School teams are coed; all other age groups will have separate gender teams and brackets
Can I request a friend or a coach?
Yes! You may request a friend for your child. We do our best to accommodate requests but we register over 1200 kids in our recreational program and we do not guarantee that we will be able to fulfill all requests. For greatest chances of fulfilling your request, register early! Make sure the friend is eligible to be on the same team (by birth year) and that the friend has also signed up! If we cannot fulfill a friend request we will try to match the player with other players from the same school.
My child is in multiple sports and activities. How can I be sure the practice schedule will work for us?
Similar to other sports programs, we accommodate our coaches' practice time requests in order to continue to have enough coaches for the teams every year. We are also constrained to the times and days allocated to us by the various cities and schools. Unfortunately, this means we are unable to take parent requests for practice days/times. You will be notified by your child's coach by the end of July about your schedule. If you have to have certain days or times please consider volunteering to coach and we will work with your schedule!
Can I coach my child?
Yes! We rely on volunteer parent coaches to give all those who register a chance to play.We train, educate and provide starter equipment to our new coaches. Register to coach here or email us for more info!
"My child is small for their age." "My child has a disability." Can he/she play in a younger age bracket?
Unfortunately, while we understand these and other requests, players are never allowed to "play down" an age group, for any reason. It is not allowed by US Soccer or US Club, our insurer.
"My child is talented and wants to play up with their friends in an older age group."
Only in extremely rare circumstances do we allow players to "play up" an age group. You must contact the board for prior approval and be able to demonstrate the player has exceptional skill and readiness as well as include the permission of the coach who will be accepting the player in the older age group. Requests made here will not be considered and may not even be seen by our registrars! Contact requests@goldcountrysoccer.org for more info.
What happens if we register for the rec league but tryout for a competitive team and are offered a spot on a comp team? Can we get a refund?
Yes, you may register for rec soccer and also have your child try out for a comp team in late May. If your child is accepted to a comp team you will need to notify us and we will apply your rec fees to the comp registration. However, uniform fees remain non-refundable.
What is the recreational league uniform and do I need to purchase one?
Rec uniforms are required and include one reversible jersey and one pair of shorts. Players may use GCSL uniforms from previous years. We also have some available pre-owned uniforms (inquire via email). Parents must purchase black or navy socks OR themed team socks as determined by coach, shin guards, soccer cleats (no baseball or football cleats allowed). Parents are also responsible for providing their child with an appropriately sized soccer ball (U6-U8 size 3; U9-U12 size 4; U14+ size 5).
If my child decides not to play, doesn't like their team assignment or can't make the practice times can we have a refund?
Refund Policy: No refunds after July 15th--no exceptions. Refund requests made in writing before July 15th will be granted according to the following policy: There is a $40 non-refundable registration fee and any uniforms purchased are also non-refundable ($30).
Do you have a financial aid program?
Yes! Financial aid is available for qualifying families. Please click here to see the application on our website. We are working on a spanish language version. Please email us for one!
